Danielle & Ben met on a remote job site in Alaska studying birds for the summer. Their first months were spent amidst swamps and mosquito nets talking about bugs and baby birds. When I asked them to tell me the story of how they first met, it was clear how their love of feathered creatures permeated much of the way they interacted.

Christine & Austin are two people who know how to get down and I appreciate that about them. You can see their playful energy come through in their portraits, in the way they dance and interact with their friends. Their lively wedding at Crow Creek Mine came on a rainy day in Girdwood, as the days in Girdwood often are. But under the safe covering of a clear tent, their parade was undampened.

There’s a certain serenity in the small seaside town at the end of the road. Seward has always held my heart and just might be my favorite place in all of Alaska. I was beyond excited that Melissa & Chris had me down to photograph their wedding there last summer. They even had me come early to photograph family photos on the beach and their quaint backyard party the day before.

Of all it brings to the table, one of the most beautiful parts about my job is the opportunity it affords me to witness and celebrate love on a regular basis. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the what a privilege it is to be truly known and loved by someone. It doesn’t come around everyday and when it does, it takes a while for the roots to grow.

From our very meeting months before their wedding, Kendra & Austin made an impact on me with their vulnerability. I could tell you all about how lucky we got with the weather that day. How we geared up to be rained on and then the skies miraculously stopped and gave us an hour of dry bliss. I could tell you about how symphonic the colors were. How the jewel tones of all their dresses sang in perfect harmony with the technicolor reds and yellows on the trees.

Last fall things came full circle when Mandy asked me to shoot her wedding in downtown Anchorage. The day her and Phil planned was all sorts of special from their sky-high ceremony, to the fleet of vintage cars, and all the way to their feast of Moose’s Tooth and Wild Scoops. What’s more than all those beautifully executed details though was how special this wedding was for me.

I cut my teeth on the work of portrait photographers based in big cities and studying their work taught me to the love an urban landscape. I got to know Geliah & Brian when I had the privilege of shooting their wedding film last fall. I came to enjoy their company so readily as they are two people who are just so genuinely themselves. They are a balance of fire and water, urban and nature. For our session together, we decided to split our time to celebrate both sides. I felt real grateful we got to reconnect this fall for these portraits to celebrate their one year anniversary.
