Little Miss Maisey came into the world simultaneously later and way faster than any of us ever thought she would. Given that the sweet little thing was to be born in the summer, it was right at the start of my wedding season. I had one wedding on the day she was due and one wedding later that week so I arranged for back up in case she decided to be born while I was shooting.
On the day of her due date, I went to photograph my wedding. The whole day passed and nothing happened. No baby. Each day for the rest of the week, I waited for a call. And still…nothing. My weekend wedding came round and I made it through the whole day with not a single call or text. When I finally arrived home after a 12 hour day, I downloaded all the wedding photos to my computer, took a shower, and went to bed.
Barely an hour and half later my phone rang. It was Corwyn.
Lindsey was having contractions. He said, “Come in an hour? Be here within the hour?” Truth be told I was too delirious to clarify, so I got in my car and immediately drove to their house.
Less than 2 hours after I arrived, Maisey was born.
It’s like I said…Later and WAY faster than we ever thought.
As a disclaimer, this film does include some nudity (because, duh, it’s a birth). So, proceed accordingly.
I’m so incredibly grateful I got to be present for this birth and so glad I got the opportunity to make this film. I hope you enjoy it.
When Lindsey and Corywn’s son, Miles, was born 7 weeks early, every plan they had for what his birth would be like changed. You can watch his film here.
That’s the thing with babies, you never really can know how or when they’ll decide to make their entrance. But you can hope, and you can prepare.
They hoped little Miss Maisey would stay in all the way to term, and she did. The prepared for a water birth on the floor of their bedroom. And right when she was ready, the babe decided she’d just come right on out. And gloriously she did.
Below are some of the photos from Maisey’s newborn session. Right at home in the house where she was born.
Making photos and films for this family has been one of the biggest delights of my career. I met Lindsey and Corywn in a Kaladi Brothers Coffee shop on a spring afternoon many moons ago and since then, they have continually invited me back into their lives to document the births and growing up of their babies. I love that I get to make films that these kids will watch decades from now. They’ll get to hear the very first thing their parents ever said to them, how they waited and anticipated their arrival with joy and love.
It’s a privilege I hold with such tender esteem and I can’t wait for these mementos to become even more valuable for this family as time goes on.
Major respect for the team at Heritage Midwifery for the beautiful job they did caring for Lindsey and empowering her to bring her baby earthside. And if you want to peek at Lindsey’s maternity session when Maisey was on the inside, you can check it out here.
